"Dance is the hidden language of the soul"

« on: October 05, 2008, 06:19:24 PM »

I saw it in SF awhile ago but because there are so little reviews of the tour on here, I'll try and recall the show. Sorry I didn't write it sooner.

MWBM- Beautiful!!! Her vocals are soooo much better than Socha, yet not quite as good as Lea's. I would of preferred a little more scooping or anything to give it a little more personality but she still sounded great!

Stork- I LOVE ANGELA!!! Seriously, she was hilarious. As much as I love Christine, I have to say I like Angela more (SORRY CHRISTINE!). Christy was good in this scene too, especially after her mother said she didn't like the dress.

MWBMR- All the girls did great in this song but I have to say Kimiko stole my attention. She was rockin and I loved it. Christy was getting into it too, which was a little strange, IMO. I kind of liked how Lea didn't rock out too much, it was very Wendlaish, but I liked how Christy changed it up a bit. Steffi also was great here.

Latin Class- Same old same old. Boys were great.

ATK- Kyle has a nice voice but some of his acting choices threw me off a little bit. He kept making these strange, goofy faces. He still did an awesome job with this song. He went flat once but he fixed himself.

BOL- Blake, of course, was perfection. I loved how the boys had the same dynamic energy of the OBC. They were all great here. I loved Anthony and Andy in this song!

MJ- Hilarious!!! LOVED Kimiko's radical line. The girls sounded great, here, although I would've liked more from Gabby and Sarah. Andy was hysterical. He was so creepy, I loved it. Very Johnny-esq, but better (sorry Johnny, still love ya). I defiantly liked him more than Matt D. Matt as Georg was pretty funny too, loved his facial expressions.

TM- Really beautiful. The cast really sounds great together. Steffi stood out in this song, especially when she first came out. Beautiful. Matt's solo was eh. Nothing special. I prefer Skylar and Gerard's version but he still did good. His voice got lost a few times. It seems like he was trying to be like Skylar too much. He needed to add something to his character. I'm sure he'll grow into Georg more as the tour progresses but he didn't do it for me here.

WOYB- Out of all the Melchi/Wendla pairs I've seen (Groff/Michele, Socha/Riabko, Parrish/Socha, Murman/Swenson) they have the least chemistry. I'm not saying there wasn't chemistry because there WAS but they just didn't have that 'I'm sorta attracted to you but sorta not' vibe. They're voices blended well together. Christy went a little flat on the 'oh, you're gonna be wounded' but other than that, they were great vocally. Kyle blinked a lot in this song which was a little strange...

DIKW- Sarah was just...not good. I'm sorry but she was the worst Martha I've seen so far. Vocally she was decent but her acting was just plain. I didn't feel too much sympathy for her and SHE WOULD NOT STOP USING HER HANDS! She has potential but at this point, I don't think she is ready. Steffi sounded AMAZING on her verse but together, they didn't blend too well.

Beating Scene- Oh boy. This got a LOT of laughs, which was disappointing, but it is what it is. I wasn't fond of Kyle or Christy here. Kyle did more of his goofy faces and Christy just didn't seem right. There was something about her here that didn't sit well with me. Especially here line "I've never felt...anything." I've always loved Lea's delivery of this line, and I respect Christy for not copying it but it just wasn't powerful enough. Loved Antony's WOYB reprise thing or whatever we call it.

ATTWN- Blake was on fire tonight, not that there's ever a time when he's not. Angela was great here, too. The boys complimented Blake really nicely. I loved when Andy came out, I don't know why but there was just something really amazing about him here.

MBN- Again, Kyle's acting was a little strange. He did the faces again but his voice was nice. I don't know if he was really tired or sick but he went flat again. The two times I've seen him before he didn't have pitch problems.

Hayloft/IB- Christy's acting here was excellent. I really liked how she really seemed liked she didn't want to do it but eventually gave in. This was the highlight for Kyle's acting. I've always been a fan of how Groff delivered the lines to intense but it was nice to see something different. The cast sounded gorgeous together. I could here Steffi over everyone at two points (which was fine cause I love the girl), but they sounded beautiful.

Intermission was not fun. The people in front of me were talking about how terrible the show was, and 'that dude who plays that guy Moritz or whatever.' They were getting on my last nerve especially when they were like 'I can't believe they got naked. That Wendla chick has gots some big boobs' They wouldn't shut up during the second act.

TGO- Christy's acting was really nice here and she sounded really pretty. Poor Kyle, you could tell he needed to clear his throat or get some water through the entire song, but he still sounded nice. The goofy faces got a little annoying here as well, though.

DDS/BW- No point in telling y'all how amazing Blake was. Steffi was AMAZINGGGG!!!! Seriously, loved her acting, LOVED her voice. She was the perfect Ilse. Perfect. They had great chemistry as well. Loved them. Blake's monologue was heartbreaking, the best I've seen it. Even those annoying girls in front of me cried.

LB- Kyle's high notes are beautiful and his acting was spot on here.Everyone looked soo hurt and soo upset, it was perfect. One of the best LBs as far as everyone's acting goes.

TF- Brilliant. Everyone was having fun. Especially Krystina, she was rockin it out. Kimiko was really fun to watch as well! I also really loved Andy here.

WOYBR- ANDY KICKS MAJOR ASS! Seriously, the best Hanschen I've seen. Loved his acting. He was just so creepy!!! Ben was very adorable and very lovable. Good mix of Gideon and Blake D. Overall, the best WOYBR I've seen, mainly because of Andy but Ben was really nice too.

Doctor/What Have You Done Scene- I really liked Henry's doctor. He was just plain creepy, which I liked. Not quite as creepy as Glenn's (which seriously, I love Glenn's doctor!!!) but still, weird. Angela was great. She defiantly showed the shock and anger really well but also seemed concerned and almost sorry for Wendla. Christy's "Why didn't you tell me" gave me chills.

Whispering- Far better than Socha's. Her voice sounded lovely here, maybe not as strong as Lea's but she still sounded really beautiful. She has the pureness of Socha's voice but much more power and variation (not to mention she has a great since of pitch unlike...well...you can guess :]). I liked her acting during this song. She seemed somewhat angry  whereas Lea and Alexandra show regret (both work but it was nice seeing something new).

Reformatory Scene- Loved Anthony here. He put a lot of personality into it. All the boys did excellent. Kyle's acting was good here.

Letter- Okay, I wouldn't normally put this in a review but this was so heartbreaking. Steffi read it with such sorrow I started crying a little bit. I loved Gabby's "Poor Wendla." It was her moment of the night, too bad it was only two words...

TYK- Kyle did a lot of the goofy faces here and I mean a lot. It was a little distracting. Blake sounded amazing. Christy sounded good on this song but her "I Believe" wasn't as powerful as I'd hoped, but it wasn't awful.

SOPS- Gorgeous. Steffi was amazing.

CHARACTER DIAGRAMS! Ok, so this was something my friend and I were doing so I thought  I'd do it here as well. It's just a little 'diagram' of my favorite actors for each role...they're really fun,Warning- I'm a very honest person...

I wonder if you've actually seen all of those people or if you've only "seen" those people.

I really have seen them. I make it up to NY regularly. Honest.

Nice review. I actually LOVE it when Wendla is the most angsty girl in MWBMR. In my opinion, Lea never gave ENOUGH energy.

Me too. Alexandra does this thing on Broadway where she doubles down on the beat and practically like sits on the floor...it's amazing haha.

I understand why people like that but I just liked the way Lea did it. She showed it in her face. I just don't see how rocking out that hard (like Alexandra and Christy) is very Wendla. I don't think it's a matter of who's more talented but just personal preference.

I think the point is that it's NOT Wendla. The songs are their alter-egos..would Moritz ever rock out in real life the way he does in Don't Do Sadness? Wendla is meek but gets her chance to rock out in the reprise not as her, but as a pop star. Just my thoughts on it, anyway.

I totally understand what you are saying. I don't dislike the rocking out thing, I just prefer how Lea's was all in her face and voice. She seemed like she was demanding to know more not just being frustrated. I love seeing new actors do different things! Maybe if I get the chance to see Christy do it again I'll like it more (I'm REALLY sorry to anyone who likes her but I don't like Socha in that song because...well she yells the whole thing. SORRY!) . But I totally understand what you said.

No problem! Everyone has their opinions. I wasn't talking about anyone's voice in the song, though, just their body movements.

Haha, I wasn't saying that you shouldn't like Lea's MWBMR better than Socha's. Just giving my opinion=)

And in my opinion, Socha's Reprise is one of the greatest things I've seen on that stage. But I understand that many people dislike it.

I lovelovelove Christy. To me, she is the best Wendla. Lea's voice was a little better, but Christy beats her out as far as the passion and soul she puts into it. This whole cast. You can basically FEEL the want.

This was a great review! I'm so upset that I didn't know about Spring Awakening until I was away at school. The tour doesn't come to stupid Hawaii!!! Its really depressing. I would have seen it in San Francisco. I get the feeling you LOVE andy but aren't that crazy about kyle ha. Kyle is SO great in all the videos i've seen of him, but i'm probably biased because i have the biggest crush on him Smiley. Great review though.
