Stick me in the camp that really likes the new dialogue.
I have to say, I did enjoy the little gasps from the audience whenever something was revealed to them (also, I was thoroughly amused by the reaction of the girls sitting stage right during I Believe).

I disagree... I think it ruins any possibility of surprise when Melchior finds Wendla's grave... before it was HINTED at, but now it's pretty blatantly spelled out.
I always loved hearing the little gasp from the audience members who hadn't figured it out when Melchior said, "Here lies, with God, Wendla Berg--". (also the little "oooooh" when Wendla's mother asks, "And the nausea?")
Maybe I'm just strange because the first thing that I knew about SA is that Wendla died, but I've always thought it was pretty guessable even from the dialogue they had before. Thus, I love the new dialogue. yeah i feel the same way. my first time seeing the show, i didn't know that wendla dies, but when the girls were standing around reading the letter it was pretty obvious. to me, that made the graveyard scene even sadder because melchior was so hopeful and excited to see wendla again, and so clueless about what had happened. depending on the melchior i'd see, sometimes i found myself holding my breath during that scene because i felt so awful about what he was about to discover. so yeah i love the new dialogue too. and i'm sure there will always be audience members who don't figure it out and still gasp, which i do love.

I think those exact lines could work, if they were in a different order. Like the Poor Melchior, Poor Wendla were still at the end. So it would go like ... "Waiting for Wendla" "Do you think she loved him?" "Now we'll never know" "Poor Melchior." "Poor Wendla."

^^That order actually seems like more of a spoiler to me. Because now we know that the knowledge of loving/not makes them pity-worthy. If my phrasing there made any sense at all. I disagree... I think it ruins any possibility of surprise when Melchior finds Wendla's grave... before it was HINTED at, but now it's pretty blatantly spelled out.

Were these girls in the 1st or 2nd row? And was one of them wearing glasses? I wouldn't know - I wasn't looking for too long, just glanced over to the on-stage seating and saw a whole bunch of girls get very giggly at, um, what they were seeing. It was cute.

I knew she died when I saw the show for the first time, but my mom figured it out...even before the letter scene haha. My mom turns to me in my seat during the reformatory scene and says, "she dies, right?" haha. and then at "Poor Wendla" it was obvious.

I can't wait to see it for myself next week after hearing all your comments. I've heard mixed things about Ilse but nobody has mentioned her on here which is encouraging.
I can't wait to see what ilse looks like with red hair. Don't know how that'll be. BOHEMIAN, lol! What are the ages of the cast? These are the ones I know. Charlotte: 18 Aneurin: 21 Natasha: 18 Evelyn: 20 (I KNOW, RIGHT?!! She's SO cute!) They're all above 18 though, right? *SSB x iwan is 23 according to his resumé on LAMDA (which matt doyle also attended!)

I personally do not like the fact that Melchior sings in Whispering. That song is Wendla's big moment, and I feel like having him singing kind of belittles it. The whole scene is about her growing up and trying to wrap her head around all of these changes, and it's about her character arc more than it's about their relationship.
I am kind of intrigued by the thought of the sliding chair though. Seems like it could be cool, if not a little unnecessary.

I don't need a life that's normal, that's way too far away. But something next to normal would be okay.

It worked really, really well live, I thought. The way it was done, with all the lighting doesn't shift the attention away from Wendla too much, and at one point, if anything, kind of increases it. Whispering was never my favourite song, but the way they did just made it incredibly beautiful and poignant. The sliding chair was a little odd at first, because I wasn't expecting it, but it worked a lot better than I thought it would. It really was an absolutely beautiful moment.

The sliding chair was awesome to see live. Really random and really cool.
As for Whispering, I really think I need to see it again when I know it's coming to work out whether or not I actually like it, you know?

Yeah, I know what you mean, 407! I'm sort of glad I knew what to expect when I went there. Having heard the song so many times before, it would have really thrown me off to suddenly see and hear that version. Knowing it was coming (even though the only thing I knew about it was that Melchior sang bits and that there was a sliding chair) kind of stopped it from being too distracting.

I think the new girls lines work during the letter because I know some people who figured it out the minute Frau Bergmann goes to the abortionist (although I don't know how since that never occured to me) while I know others who didn't figure it out until "here rest in God Wendla Berg-", in fact one of those people didn't even figure out Wendla was pregnant after the nausea line (she thought she was getting her period, lmao).
The cool thing about the whole graveyard scene is that you can interpret it 2 different ways whether you know about Wendla or not.
