I love Emily, and she was definitely one of my favorites from the closing cast, but I don't think her Wendla would have been very good. At least vocally, anyway.
I'd still love to have seen it, though.

I disagree with that so much lol. I'm not a Socha fan...at all. I thought she was awful. Christy was a breath of fresh air for me.

^ LOVE THAT GIF.
I never saw Socha, so I can't really comment on her acting. But just from YouTube and other things where I've heard her voice, Christy's is VASTLY better.

I saw both Socha and Christy and I really disagree as well. I like Socha a lot, but I kind of felt like she really over acted in certain scenes. I also didn't like how she played certain things for laughs (like the "But I'm not married" line). Vocally I think it is a bit more of a draw, though I would probably again give the edge to Christy. I would take Socha over Christy in MWBMR any day but, for the most part, I would take Christy in everything else.

IMO, Socha's voice in the role>Christy's voice in the role. But I think Christy is a much better singer and actress.

It always felt tacked-on to me. I would have been fine with the show ending with TYK.

I love SOPS. Except on the OBCR. The live one is so much better. That song is just so beautiful and haunting.

I love SOPS, it's such a beautiful song! And I think it brings a kind of peace to many audience members, specifically people that have never seen the show before. It keeps them from leaving the theatre feeling sad and drained and unsettled like they very well could if the show ended with TYK. Though I know a lot of people feel that way anyways when the show ends.

I'm not saying I don't LIKE the song... it's just not my favorite SA song. At all. That being said, give me the live version over the OBCR any day.

The song IS kind of weird to have at the end of the show, but I feel like it gives a sense of vague resolution for all the characters. If the show ended with TYK, only Melchior, Moritz, and Wendla would have any kind of resolution, and I feel like the other characters are also super important to the theme since they represent the young people of society as a whole. Seeing the whole cast in SOPS leaves you with the hope that maybe, just maybe, they learned something too.

other than Ilse, the other characters aren't really important. Both Wedekind and Sater used them as comic foils and, in the case of the adults, to propel the plot slightly, but other than that, they're not really that important. They don't learn from the mistakes of their society, clearly, seeing as Sater said everyone who survives grows up to be a Nazi.

that's right, sorry about the misquote. The point still remains. Sure, they're all repentant in the Song of Purple Summer, but did that change anything? No.

I don't think they are repentant in SOPS, it's just a nice little closing. It's literally just people onstage singing, and so irrelevant to the characters.

ugh I really need more sleep. Sorry, my point is that the supporting characters aren't super important. They add some nice depth to the play, but you could really get by with just Melchior, Wendla, Moritz, and Ilse. And the Masked Man for Wedekind's play.

It always felt tacked-on to me. I would have been fine with the show ending with TYK. I COMPLETELY agree with this. I think the last lines of TKY also have that sort of ~*hopeful*~ kind of note to it. Especially because I think that SOPS is a huge, lyrical mess. Actually, I think it's the worst song, lyrically.

It's literally just people onstage singing, and so irrelevant to the characters. I don't think that's necessarily the case... at all...at least not in my opinion. The song is clearly about hope and coming of age, which is what all the characters go through, not just Melchior. It's important because it really brings the message home and ends the show on a note of exuberance, celebrating the youth of the show and embracing the hope of the future of the characters. All the characters, not just Melchior. And without SOPS, Ilse's character arc would not develop full circle. In my interpretation of the show, her conversation with Moritz impacts on her so much to the point that she is the one who sings the song of hope and maturity. I would go as far to say that SOPS is one of the most important songs in the show...not plot wise, but for character development and thematic purposes it definitely has its place. And yes, it sounds pretty.
