The Girl Who Fixed The Chair

« on: May 16, 2009, 03:42:42 AM »

Andrew and Skylar are taking part in The Vineyard Theatre Lab's production of "The Burnt Part Boys", running from May 26 to June 9.

This gripping new musical drama is an unforgettable coming of age story that follows a group of teenagers in 1962 on life-transforming odyssey/adventure, deep in West Virginia 's coal country.  The Burnt Part Boys' gifted young creative team have created "a rich theatrical experience" – (Variety), that "gives hope that the American musical theatre is not dead yet" (Associated Press). SPRING 2009

You can only purchase tickets in advance if you're a member of The Vineyard Theatre. However, $20 rush tickets are available to the general public 2 hours prior to curtain. Cash only. Limit 2 per person. Based on availability.

Haha. Last night when Andrew was telling us about my first reaction was, "Two Georgs!!". And he was like "I know! Isn't that crazy?"

This is so exciting! The was Andrew described the music [I forget what he said though- like rock/country/something else] sounded really original. Also, I believe he said the production is moving Off-Broadway early next year!

It's even weirder since they weren't even in it at the same time.

And if only Matt Shingledecker weren't on tour and in this-It would be the 3 American Georgs!

Any chance it'll extend?

It started tonight and runs through June 9. I don't know enough details to speak authoritatively about an extension, but my understanding was that it wouldn't extend in this incarnation, but it could be brought back for an Off-Broadway run later. Right now it's a lab production.

Yay, I'm glad you liked it!! I'm excited for your review, Emmy!
When I spoke to Andrew about this at Caught in the Threshold, he seemed pretty confident that its going to move to off-bway eventually. I hope it does!!

The Burnt Part Boys Begins Powerhouse Theater Run July 17
By Andrew Gans
17 Jul 2009

Vassar & New York Stage and Film Powerhouse Theater's 25th anniversary season continues July 17 with the first performance of the mainstage musical The Burnt Part Boys.

Directed by Erica Schmidt, Burnt Part Boys will play the Martel Theater in the Vogelstein Center for Drama and Film through July 26.

The cast includes Al Calderon as Pete, Skylar Astin as Jake, Noah Galvin as Dusty, Andrew Durand as Chet, Molly Ranson as Frances, Joe Cassidy as Pete's Movie Fantasy Men/Dad and Timothy Warmen, John Schiappa and David Abeles as the other three miners. Matt Hinkley is featured on guitar with Joseph Brent on the fiddle.

Burnt Part Boys was penned by Chris Miller (music), Nathan Tysen (lyrics) and Mariana Elder (book). The musical, according to press notes, is described as such: "Five teenagers set out on a quest to find the Burnt Part coal mine, in the mountains of West Virginia, where their father's died 10 years earlier, in a tragic mining accident. Three of them hope to close the mine forever – preserving the living tomb to their fathers – while the older teens, employed by the coal mine company, seek to stop them."

Peter Pucci choreographs with musical direction by Vadim Feichtner. The production also features set design by Derek McLane, costume design by Kaye Voyce, lighting design by David Weiner and sound design by Brett Jarvis. Hannah Cohen is the stage manager.

A full Off-Broadway staging of The Burnt Part Boys — a co-production between the Vineyard Theatre and Playwrights Horizons — is expected on the Mainstage of Playwrights in 2010.

As I stated above, I went to see the show tonight and it was really good.

The show tells the story of adventure-seeking and movie buff Pete (played by Al Calderon of 13) whose father has been killed in a mining accident ten years prior to the start of the show. The show begins as Pete hears that the mine in which his father died in is being reopened and his older brother, Jake (Skylar) will be going to work there. With the help of his best friend Dusty (Noah Gavlin), Pete goes on a quest to blow up the mine to keep the same fate from befalling his brother.

Along the way, Jake and his best friend Chet, (Andrew) find out what Pete and Dusty are up to and go to stop them from getting hurt. The mine is referred over and over as "the burnt part" due to the scorched earth surronding the mine. The show is really wonderfully done and is truly a project on the rise, because the talent invovled is beyond wonderful.

Al has such a great voice that we only got a taste of in 13, and Skylar and Andrew show their range vocally through the rock-country fused score. Two highlights are Noah Galvin as Pete's nerdy best friend and Molly Ranson, as runaway Frances who joins the boys on their journey to "the burnt part".

The set is a massive barn and many set pieces like ladders are used to represent mountains and other things. The show is good in many aspects, but there's still some kinks to work out like the use of the miners ghosts (including Pete and Jake's father, Chet's father and France's father) because sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. Also, the emotional aspect toward the end was done well, but can only get better with time.

I really hope the show gets the off-Broadway run that has been rumored, because it's a really great show and it's so great to see Skylar and Andrew on stage once more.
