McG Goes to 'War' With a Romantic Comedy

File this under 1) It's a stretch or 2) Spreading your wings.

Action director McG is in negotiations to helm the romantic comedy "This Means War" with Bradley Cooper and Reese Witherspoon taking on lead roles, according to a report in The Hollywood Reporter. "War," which has been floating around Hollywood since 1998 and at times has had director Gore Verbinski and star Martin Lawrence interested in it, revolves around two best friends who fall in love with the same woman and subsequently have a massive falling out.

McG's expertise is broad-based action, in such films as 'Terminator Salvation' and the two 'Charlie's Angels' outings, and even his attempt at drama, 'We Are Marshall,' was rescued by its football action. Clearly in McG's hands story lines takes a back seat. So what's with a romantic comedy? Is McG going to take this tale of two men and their disintegrating friendship into another realm, kind of like the escalating violence in 'The War of the Roses'? Or is he going to play it straight? But wait, there's more: McG's name is attached to a movie version of the Broadway and Tony-award winning musical 'Spring Awakening,' about the sexual awakening of a group of teens in 19th century Germany. What's going on here?

What do you think?

Every time this thread is bumped (shut up, Frances dear), I make a list in my head of movie musicals I think will actually be good. Definitely In the Heights. Now I'm wondering if American Idiot would work if done the way Passing Strange was.

By which I mean that I have lost all interest in an SA movie.

I always forget that the SA movie is actually happening, then it gets mentioned like this. It's odd.

McG directing the SA movie scares me. A lot. Why the fuck would they want him, of all the possible directors, to do this?
I know it's not official or anything (or is it?), but seriously.

Why on earth is Spring Awakening being mentioned along with a tacky romantic comedy?

I don't know if I like this.

Didn't you read the article? They're turning Spring Awakening into a romantic comedy. Obvs.

But, really, are you actually confused as to why Spring Awakening was mentioned in that article? It was questioning if McG would be able to handle a romantic comedy because all of his movies favor action over storyline, and then the mention of Spring Awakening is for the same purpose: Could he handle a musical without action? Or would it become very McG and just turn into an action movie.

No, no, I get it. I guess it's just that the article to me, seems like a glammed out piece of Hollywood junk in which Spring Awakening's title doesn't seem to fit.

I honestly have no idea what you're talking about.

It's an article about the director attached to direct the film, of course they'll mention it.

Action is definately something important in the story that wasn't included in the musical. Like how Moritz was supposed shoot himself with an A-K 47 rather than a pistol but Steven, Duncan, and Micheal didn't have the funds or the balls to do it.

Um, it's been official since it was announced last April.

And he also directed "We Are Marshall", so it's not like he's only done crazy blowing up things action films.

Yeah, I knew that they had talked about it but I didn't know if he was officially contracted to do it yet.

I don't think there should be a movie. I really don't want a SA movie. If they make one, I will go see it, but I really don't want that to happen.

I'm still waiting for this to ~actually~ happen. I hope it doesn't. I don't think it could be done correctly by McG(ag).

I don't think this was posted yet. McG spoke briefly about the movie in this article.

Huh. I guess it is still happening.

I think the best thing about the movie will be having the songs rerecorded with the fleshed-out harmonies.
