Stef and I feel that the actual original Wendla should be recognized, since she, yanno, never ever is. The original Wendla is not, contrary to popular belief, Lea Michele.

The original Wendla is the one, the only, Haven Burton. She was the first Wendla in the first workshop of Spring Awakening. I know most people don't know it, but now you do!! This isn't a lie either - a few of us have spoken with Haven on several occasions and she has confirmed it. Lea Michele on the other hand....seems to have forgotten about it. (So don't ask her - Penski still has battle wounds.)

So in short, I just feel like Haven should get her name somewhere in regards to being the first ever, since no one else seems to give her any credit.

This thread is in no way intended to be disrespectful to Lea, so don't even start.

I would give SO MUCH to hear this workshop. It would be SO FIERCE.

And yeah, I think it's dumb to pretend like Haven's workshop never existed, just because Lea wasn't in it. Who cares if, out of all the workshops, she wasn't in ONE?

Yay Haven!

Penski and I spoke to Haven recently about it and she loves Lea in the role and thought she was really good and her voice is gorgeous, so let it be known that Haven has no hate for the girl stealing her recognition as the first Wendla.
I loved talking to mah girl about the show recently because she loves it so much. She still has such a strong connection to the show and thinks the cast is incredibly talented.

Was the first workshop the one 2001...or were there some before that...if it was the one in 2001 Haven and Lea sound crazy alike!

It was before the 2001 workshop. As far as we know, no audio exists of it.

Completely true! Haven has confirmed to me on more than one occasion that she did the very first workshop way back in the day. She even listed like the entire cast who did it with her (don't remember who she said...gimme a break it was over a year ago) But she was admittedly a bit...upset when Lea's bio said she was the very first Wendla. Her face was....priceless and indescribable. SO in conclusion to my first and probably ONLY post ever on TGO Haven Burton = Original Wendla
(So don't ask her - Penski still has battle wounds.)

Also true I still have the scar where she sunk her fangs into my neck. I'm now forced to wear turtle necks for the rest of my life ::sigh::

No, 2001 workshop IS Lea.  There was one in '98 or '99, I think.  Maybe 2000?  I'd assume that was Haven.

Also, Haven is SO FIERCE so I feel like she was probably amazing and I would kill to hear it.

Also, this makes me LOL really hard because Lea is just like I'VE BEEN WITH THE SHOW FOR 8 YEARS.  MARCH 18TH, 2007 WAS THE FIRST TIME SOMEONE OTHER THAN ME PLAYED WENDLA.

Her face and acting out opening the playbill and seeing that was PRICELESS and I still laugh over it.

I so badly wish that she would sing MWBM one day.

She told me and Penski she had gotten a role in the Joe Iconis show "The Black Suits" and she would have sang Blue Hair, but she had other commitments so she turned it down. We did however randomly sing Blue Hair together in Times Square because that's how me, Haven, and Penski roll.

how amazingly dramatic would it be if Haven came back and took over the role when Lea leaves...except she wouldnt be taking over the role because it was hers in the first place. Oh so juicy. And in the playbill "I was the original Wendla and don't you bitches let Lea Michele tell you different!"

Haven was my favorite Maureen (Well, I only saw three, the other two being Nicolette and Ava) and I would love to hear her Mama Who Bore Me. O.M.G. imagine her Whispering.

What songs were in the show when she did the workshop?

Can we just use this as a Haven Burton love thread? I would cozy up and make this place my home. I love Haven so much! If she went on for Elle again in LEGALLY BLONDE, I would be willing to give up my IN THE HEIGHTS tickets for that.

Okay, I don't know about that but the point is that she's incredible and I have mad respect for her. I'm hoping to finally meet her when I see SHREK!

Did I mention she's absolutely stunning?

I'll make Penski ask her more about it later. Whispering was def in it, but it was different then.

It would be so epic (omg I never use that word) if Haven decided to take over the role of Wendla DURING the show. Haven is amazing and she would seriously interrupt the show and, like a professional, start off exactly where Lea left off. Her bio, aside from her adding her love for sunshine, would most definitely say that she is the original Wendla and Lea Michele is not.

"Not to be upstaged by random audience member #1, Patti LuPone had an air vent fall on her at the end of Rose's Turn."

Haven is the best Maureen EVER!

I'm not sure if I should tell you "you're so lucky" or "you're so unlucky". Those are two badddd Maureens (well, Nicolette's not that bad but I would much prefer an u/s), but you had Haven...so that completely makes up for it.

Remember that time Haven went on as Maureen and when she screamed PARCHED, she fell over on the floor. One minute you see her, the next minute you don't. I thought Antonique would pass out from laughter. OMG I fucking love that woman.

For the record Haven would also add in her bio, "I like puppies and ice cream."

Haven Wendla would be so FIERCE live. Forget the fact that she can't pull off 14. I don't care. I want to see the original. Haven could be to Spring Awakening what Karmine Alers is to RENT. The FIERCENESS makes you forget the age.

And Andrew... I think you meant to say GLORIOUSLY EPIC.

I believe that if Haven became the replacement Wendla, not a single person would ever complain. It would probably be the first time in Spring Awakening history, that if the white slip of doom fell out of someone's Playbill announcing Haven's absence from that particular performance, babies would cry. Hell, adults would cry. Tragedy!

Clearly the only acceptable Melchior to match the utter fierceness of Haven Burton would have to be Mr. Raul "Suave" Esparza.

Haven would make the peach fuzz on Groff's face stand right up.

What if....
Lea fell down a well, Socha got hit by a bus, Eryn had to go to Canada and Phoebe had pnuemonia.  All on the same day.

They could call Haven and she could conveniently be Wendla that night.  IT WOULD WORK.
